Working Group D

Digital Standards Working Group
(Recording)

Description

Tomorrow’s space and ground architectures must be flexible, scalable, and interoperable. In an increasingly interconnected world, standardization is critical for mission success, but all standardization requires compromise. What makes a good digital (data and models) standard, and where can standardization offer us the most return on investment? This working group will discuss the role of standards in digital transformation from two perspectives:

  • Utilization of digital engineering approaches and methodologies to define and manage design and interface standards across a complex space enterprise
  • Definition of digital standards to enable DE to be applied consistently across the enterprise (particularly between government and industry) and to enable interoperability between data, models, and tools
Leads Dean Bucher and Barbara Braun, The Aerospace Corporation

Biographies

Mr. Dean Bucher is the Principal Director of Digital Engineering Integration at The Aerospace Corporation, where he leads the digital engineering (DE) transformation of Aerospace. In this role, Mr. Bucher is responsible for providing strategic direction to all corporately funded DE initiatives and ensuring that these efforts are highly integrated to contribute to the broader strategic vision for digital engineering. He also works across numerous, emerging customer DE efforts to better identify opportunities and integrate these for the benefit of the National Security Space (NSS) and Civil Space enterprises. Mr. Bucher joined The Aerospace Corporation in 2005 as a Member of the Technical Staff. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri and an MS in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and he is currently pursuing a PhD in Systems Engineering from Colorado State University.

Barbara Braun is the Principal Director, Enterprise Systems Engineering Office, within the Corporate Chief Engineer’s Office (CCEO). Ms. Braun leads the Enterprise Systems Engineering Office as the space enterprise undergoes a period of transition: from a focus on mission risks to an understanding of enterprise risks; from a process of risk elimination to one of risk management; and from an emphasis on exquisite systems to an embrace of spiral development, hybrid architectures, and a production mindset. Ms. Braun joined the Aerospace Corporation in 2000 as a Senior Member of the Technical Staff following several years of active duty service in the U.S. Air Force. She holds a B.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Aeronautics and Astronautics, and an M.S. from the University of New Mexico in Mechanical Engineering.
