The European Space Agency (ESA) has been practicing software methodology and standards for two decades very successfully in the domain of ground segment software systems engineering. This process has been in constant evolution and will further evolve significantly. Therefore, it is important to capitalize on the lessons learned to find solutions to past problems and avoid them in the future. The talk addressed the management aspects of using software engineering methodologies rather than the methodology theories themselves.
CCSDS and OMG Space Domain Task Force (SDTF)
International standards for space data system interoperability and cross support are being developed by two quite different organizations; the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems CCSDS) and the Space Domain Task Force (SDTF) that is part of the Object Management Group (OMG). CCSDS has developed a large body of standards for communications links and upper layer protocols, and is now expanding into on-board and ground-based applications interoperability and data exchange. The SDTF has developed some standards for ground system interoperability and is now considering development of some new standards. This meeting is an opportunity to understand the plans of these two organizations and to participate in a discussion of if, and how, they might work in a more coordinated way in the future.
